Are Dentists The Only Option When Considering Teeth Whitening Methods?

Most people today are aware that there are many teeth whitening products available over the counter, but there are some people who are still hesitant to try these products without first seeing a dentist regarding teeth whitening procedures. While a dentist can provide valuable input into the type of teeth whitening product one should use, with so many effective products on the market and such an abundance of information available regarding them online, seeing a dentist before making the decision to use a teeth whitening method is no longer a requirement.

The FDA closely regulates the chemical compositions of teeth whiteners studies the effects of whiteners effects on teeth after long term use. All over the counter products have been approved as safe, non-harmful substances if the directions are carefully followed and teeth whitening solutions are administered correctly.

Most over the counter whitening products are designed to be easy to use, and in fact, the methods with the highest recommendations (kits that use mouth and teeth guards) almost replicate down to the tee the same process that a dentist would use within his or her office. Although dentists can offer tailored advice to an individual, given the availability of over the counter whiteners and their easy to follow directions, most people can leave out the middle step of seeing a doctor, choosing treatment instead in the privacy of their own home.

There are a few people however, who should still see a dentist before beginning to use teeth whitening methods. People who have highly sensitive teeth should consult their dentist before using a whitening product as their teeth may not comfortably take to the process of bleaching. For them, the increased sensitivity side effects that most people moderately and mildly experience may last longer and be excruciating.

Also, people who have been smoking or neglecting their teeth for a long period of time should see their doctor first as home teeth whitening products may not be strong enough to combat the damage they have already done to their teeth. In addition, current smokers should avoid using teeth whiteners altogether as the peroxide and smoke mixes together increasing the amount of damage already done to their teeth as a result of prolonged smoking.

For those who do not have severely sensitive teeth, a long-term smoking habit, or extremely yellowed teeth, there is no reason for them to seek a dentist's opinion or help in teeth whitening. At home products are more convenient and more cost effective as they do not involve the cost of a doctor's visit; therefore they should and can be utilized by pretty much anyone of a responsible age.
