Are Teeth Whitening Techniques Effective?
In a world where vanity and appearances are placed on a pedestal thanks to a constant supply of popular culture media sources, people are discovering new "miracle tricks" to fine-tune all parts of their bodies. One trend fairly new to the twenty-first century is the process of whitening one's teeth to produce a shinier, whiter, healthy smile. So many new products are available over-the-counter to aid in whitening teeth that sometimes it can be confusing to discern which products work if any, and if they are worth the average 25 US dollar price tag for a treatment.
Basically, the effectiveness of over the counter teeth whitening products is determined by two factors, the strength of the concentrate of the oxidizing agent that they contain, and the amount of plaque and film that is built up on one's teeth. The process is quite straightforward, an oxidizing agent, such as hydrogen peroxide, is placed onto the teeth and allowed to develop slowly bleaching out the teeth resulting in the yellowish cast being removed and shinier white teeth to emerge.
Whitening one's teeth is equitable to bleaching out hair color. It is a well known fact that dark hair will only lighten so much when bleach is left on it. However, someone with light brown hair, or blonde hair can easily end up with white hair if bleach is left on their hair for the same amount of time. Now look at the condition of your teeth. In youth it is easy to forget the rules of proper teeth care and as a result many people find themselves with stained teeth from a lack of proper brushing, or teeth that have a yellowish cast from smoking or chewing tobacco.
If a person is further along in age and has been smoking or taking poor care of their teeth for a lengthy period of time, teeth whitening tools may help peel off some of the yellowish tint, but the teeth will reach a fully white color. For these people, professional help through cosmetic dentistry is probably a better option. However, if a consumer is younger or has practicing a better dental healthcare regime, over the counter teeth whitening products will be able to lift the yellow film off of teeth providing the healthy white smile they are seeking.
Over the counter teeth whitening products can be effective if consumers bear in mind they are not miracle tools. Teeth bleaching products are not a remedy for poor dental hygiene. When used in conjunction with proper tooth care products, they are able to produce a white smile, but should not be treated as a replacement. A healthy shiny smile requires both proper maintenance and a little tweaking on the side.
